Indians are proud of their ancient civilization and culture and are often very vocal about it. But they are also one of the most hypocritical people in the world. You don’t need to go anywhere else for proof of that: just look at the state of the holy river Ganga and you would know.

India is in the race to become an economic powerhouse, but every self-respecting Indian would wish to cover up the almost ubiquitous and embarrassing sight of people openly defecating on the roadsides and fields of this country.

An ecological initiative that can hugely impact the Indian rural economy and environment if adopted widely and followed through – that is what Pandit Rajmani Tigunait and his Himalayan Institute have created in Allahabad. The cottages were made to host a large group of Panditji’s disciples who were coming over from the United States for an advanced study program.

Here is a study, as reported in the New York Times, that shows a direct, inverse relationship between air pollution and life expectancy. But we think study or no study, clean air and water is our birthright and it is our duty to leave our environment unpolluted for the coming generations.
